I've been finding that graphic organizers are my friend. I didn't think they worked for me until I tried them out this morning and BAM! It's akin to how doodling in class can increase your focus...but you get to use them later while writing your paper or research proposal! Hazzah!
You can go crazy like the first one (the clouds are topics, the rainbows are themes, and the triangles show the historical questions), more simplistic like this second one, or somewhere inbetween like this last one. Whichever you think your brain looks like most that day. I know my brain looks different on different days and I'm betting yours does too.
