hello hello!

After eight years of posts, this blog is now retired.

BUT! I have not stopped blogging.

You can see my current project at seekthewelfare, a blog on how I am endeavoring to seek the welfare of the city in which I find myself.

BUILD  fostering community through food + conversation
LIVE  tidbits + travel
PLANT  farmers’ market life + local businesses
EAT  seasonal alternative cooking
DWELL  engaging in + with local stories, culture, + art
Head on over and check it out. There's a lot going on over here in Seattle.

dear all

I will be taking a break from blogging frequently for awhile. I may still post every once in awhile, but I will be using the time to focus on working with my hand, writing letters, and reading the unread books that have piled up.

If you would like to stay in touch, I'd love to exchange emails, write letters, or set up a time to talk on the phone. Just send me an email with your mailing address.

Much love,
Katie

january

last month
> Start reading Gerard Manley Hopkins (but really) I read the intro. I say that counts, especially when this month has been so full of celebrations, boxes, packing tape, and planning.
> Write more letters I wrote several. Some of them still need to be mailed...
> Finish preparations for moving into an apartment in Seattle We move in Thursday!
> Experiment with apple cake I found a fantastic recipe and am excited to make it even better next time.

on the docket
> Move. (yes, kind of cheating because I know it's going to happen, but I say it's such a big endeavor that it counts).
> Sleep more
> Walk more
> Commute less
> Eat better

things i love about working in a bakery in december

Getting to watch customers come in and suddenly realize they can enjoy their old traditions even with their new eating restrictions.

The looks on the kids faces when they see the houses and all of the possibilities that flash across their face.

The last-minute rush-and-smile of a mother grabbing dinner rolls for Christmas.

Being able to offer a warm, safe, sweet place to those walking through the rain.

The calls of excitement echoing through the space the moment I lock the door to close Christmas Eve.

I don't believe I will ever tie a cookie cutter onto a package another way again.
