Tips For Tim

  1. It's a good idea to just not drink any tea at all right before you go to bed...or any time after four o'clock. It might just keep you up for hours.
  2. If you find yourself unable to go to sleep after hours of trying, get out your bible and read read read. Take the time that God has given you to delve into Him.
  3. Another similar situation is waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back asleep. Pray. You're awake for a reason.
  4. Be honest from the start.
  5. Another tip you will never use: if you've just painted your nails, you can run them under really cold water to speed up the drying process.
  6. Be deliberate in your friendships.
  7. Just because someone might be falling for you doesn't mean you have to have a "Define the Relationship" talk with them. Continue to treat them the same way you have before and give them the opportunity to bring it up themselves. Besides...it could be nothing.
  8. Read Jane Austen. She knows what she's talking about.
  9. Never watch a TV show or movie by yourself. I think I might have said this one before, but I recently slipped up and did anyway and really...it's not worth it.
  10. Things to do on your own that's NOT watching a TV show or movie: write a letter, take a nap, create something interesting like a duct tape wallet or a storage box, READ A BOOK YOU ENJOY.
  11. McKays. The Costco of used books. If you go, only bring the amount of money, in cash, you are willing to spend that you have decided on BEFORE you go. While you might be less in danger due to the fact that you're not an English major with a history minor and probably will never be, it's hard for just about anyone to pass over so many amazing books for oh so cheap.
  12. Be clear about your intentions in just about everything but most especially when you ask a girl to a dance. If your relationship is clearly stated, you're fine and there's no need to beat a dead horse, but don't ever leave this ambiguous.
  13. If you have trouble with wasps coming into your room but you still want fresh air, open your windows in the morning. The wasps tend to be elsewhere. Then, close your windows in the afternoon when the hot sun comes out. This will keep the cool morning air in your room and hot afternoon air out.
  14. Thursday morning at around 8am is a really good time to do laundry.
  15. Even on days that you could sleep in forever, it's a good idea to get up at eight/eight thirty-ish.  This will help you sleep better that night and will also help you get things done when there is light outside instead of staying up late that night because you slept in.
  16. Start to figure out studying abroad plans two semesters before you want to go. This will allow you to fill them out applications thoughtfully and slowly and it also gives your recommenders plenty of time to observe you and write good recommendations.
  17. Eat an orange in the shower. Peel it outside, get in the shower, and then eat it like an apple. It's glorious.
  18. On really hot days, have frozen fruit or yogurt stored in the freezer so you don't have to revert to ice cream or some such to cool you down. Also, water is tasty.
  19. Keep track of your assignments in a planner. It's just easier that way.
  20. One thing that I've found really helpful is to write an assignment that is due down on the day that it is due and highlight it. Then write it down on your to-do list (hopefully in the same planner for simplicity's sake). This makes it so with one quick flip through, you can see when everything is due. It also immediately alerts you to those weeks when you have three papers due, giving you time to work on them one at a time.
  21. Always write the due date after an assignment you've put on your to-do list.
  22. It's a good idea to have a postcard and a cup in grabbing distance if your room is liable to have wasps.
  23. If you are unafraid of/not bothered by wasps, you become a very valuable asset on your hall.
  24. Always plan to get to the restaurant ten minutes or so before your reservation.
  25. Don't prepare an overly-elaborate dance-asking-scheme unless you know the girl is going to and wants to say yes. If you do, it's very manipulating. Keep it creative but simple. When it doubt, drop the creative.
  26. Finding visual ways to show your goals being met or not are very helpful.
  27. There are many different ways to workout. Get creative.
  28. If people want you to fill out a recommendation form, make sure they are the ones who print out the form for you. It puts them in charge of the time schedule and also makes it easier for you.
  29. Never name your pens or pencils. As soon as you do, you lose them.
  30. There are many legal and still free ways to get music. Don't pirate.
  31. Go on trips with classes! It's a good way to see somewhere new, learn more about your subject, and build up relationships that you wouldn't normally have.
  32. Listen to your music library on "shuffle all." The combinations can be hilarious.
  33. Always put your laundry away right after you bring it out of the dryer. It only takes five minutes or less and it reduces the need to iron significantly.
  34. Figure out how many hours a week you need to sleep, be alone, attend classes, and do homework. THEN figure out how many hours are left and only use those hours to commit to other things. It's really easy to over commit.
  35. Buy your hall t-shirt.
