His six year old face shows his energetic personality. It practically spikes out at you from his eyes. Confidence comes spilling out of them; the confidence you only find in someone who knows who they are and where they came from. No identity questions in this young boy's mind. He's Indian and proud of it. We've never seen him before. I've never seen his confidence before.
I'm so focused on getting him to eat I'm blindsided by his words as they begin to sink into my mind.
"The Indians were here first"
"Yes. They were indeed"
"The Indians were here before God!"
"Um...well..."
"They were!"
"Well...God...
"They were here first"
"...created Indians..."
"No. They were here first. Indians were here, then white men came, then God. He was the last to show up. He must have been the first to die too because He isn't here no more."
