Behind these clouds are mountains
reaching up
and taking over the horizon when they can.
You can tell because the glow
vanishes
oh so slowly
and the clouds shine cold and then go dark.
That's when you retreat
into the warmth
surrounding the coals
of the fire you started earlier
when it was still sunny.
The chill comes from the rain
and sticks around the edges of the wood floor
no matter how hot the fire gets.
Condensation gathers on the windows
catching all the facets of the sunset,
putting the colors into the water droplets
instead of across the sky.
