portsmouth

A living breathing harbor and still home to the British Royal Navy which continues to be one of the most effective forces on the ocean today.

It is also home to the HMS Victory, the flag ship used most famously by Lord Horatio Nelson and still used by the current Admiral of the British Navy as an official meeting place and flag ship. The white ensign continues to fly at the stern (see the picture lower down).

Inside we met with many low ceiling beams and steep staircases. All in all there was actually more room than I was expecting after growing up being told how wretchedly small the ships were. Then again, I'm sure I would have not found it to be so generous if six hundred other people were also on board.

While only about twenty percent of the current Victory was present at the battle of Trafalgar which claimed Nelson's life, the lowest gun deck decking is original, most notably where Nelson actually died after receiving  his wound.
